No kits match that choice.
About these figures. Yearly electricity is an estimate for south-facing panels in London with no shade. It is not a test result, and most homes will get less. “Total” is only shown where we know the delivery charge.
800W plug-in solar kits: what the number means
800W is the most a plug-in solar kit is allowed to feed into your home at once. It isn’t the size of the panels.
So an “800W solar kit” can come with 900W, 1,000W or more of panels. The extra helps on dull days and in winter, when panels make far less than their rating. That’s why we compare kits by estimated yearly electricity, not by the number on the box.
Looking for a balcony solar kit?
“Balcony solar” and “plug-in solar” are often used to mean the same thing. But not every plug-in solar kit is suitable for a balcony.
Some kits come with a ground stand only. Some have brackets for a wall or railing. Some include no mount at all. Check the mounting line for each kit above, then check the retailer’s page and the instructions for the exact kit before you buy.
There are also rules about where panels can go, especially on anything wooden. Do I need planning permission for plug-in solar?
Plug-in solar kits: common questions
What is a plug-in solar kit?
A plug-in solar kit is one or two solar panels, a small box called an inverter, and a lead that plugs into an ordinary wall socket. The electricity it makes is used by whatever is running in your home at the time.
You’ll also see them called plug-in solar panels, plug-and-play solar, socket-connected solar, or solar panels that plug into a socket. A name on a listing doesn’t make a product compliant, though: in Great Britain a kit has to be listed as compliant on the official register. Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
How much do plug-in solar kits cost in the UK?
Plug-in solar prices in the UK currently run from £336 to £963.04 across the 35 kits we have prices for. The cheapest plug-in solar kit we list is £336. One-panel kits start at £336 and two-panel kits at £419.
These are kit prices. Delivery can be extra, and some kits don’t include a mount, so check both in the table above.
Are these plug-in solar kits compliant?
Every kit in this ranking is currently listed as compliant on the ENA register, according to the register data WattVerdict checks every day. If a kit loses that status, it drops off this page.
We don’t approve or certify products ourselves: the register does that. You can look up any system on Compare, or see how to check a plug-in solar system is compliant.
Do I need an electrician?
Usually not. Compliant kits are designed for you to set up yourself and plug into a suitable socket. Some homes will need an electrician to check or change things first. Do I need an electrician for plug-in solar?
Do I need to register plug-in solar?
Yes. In England, Scotland and Wales you register the kit online once you have it, and it takes a few minutes. Do I need to register plug-in solar?
How we rank the kits
This isn’t a hand-picked top 10. The order comes from the data: which kits are currently compliant, the retailer prices we’ve checked, what’s in each kit, and our estimate of how much electricity it could make in a year. When a price changes, the order changes with it.
We estimate each kit’s yearly electricity using the European Commission’s PVGIS solar data, then compare that with the kit price.
What we assume
- Panels in London, facing south, tilted at 35°, with no shade.
- 14% of the electricity lost in the wiring and inverter, the standard PVGIS figure.
- Hour-by-hour sunshine and weather from 2019 to 2023.
The 800W limit
A plug-in kit can only feed a limited amount of power into your home at once, usually 800W. Kits with more panels than that still make more electricity over a year, but not in proportion. Our estimates allow for each kit’s own limit.
What decides the ranking
Only the estimated yearly electricity and the kit price. We show delivery and whether a mount is included for every kit, but we don’t score them, and delivery doesn’t change a kit’s place in the ranking.
Lowest kit price, or cheapest delivered?
Some retailers only show the delivery charge at checkout. We call a kit “cheapest delivered” only when no kit with an unknown delivery charge could undercut it. Otherwise we show the lowest kit price and tell you what we know about delivery.
What this isn’t
These are estimates, not test results. We haven’t tested these kits, and the ranking says nothing about build quality or customer service. Most homes will get less than a perfect south-facing set-up.
Where the facts come from
Compliance comes from the official ENA register. Prices and kit details come from the retailer’s own page for that exact kit. Where we can’t confirm something, we say “not confirmed”.
