About WattVerdict

Independent. Verified.

We track the UK plug-in solar market so buyers can see what’s actually available, what compliance status can be verified and what’s worth comparing.

Why WattVerdict exists

It started with a £350 energy bill.

WattVerdict began with a fairly ordinary problem: our household energy bills had climbed to around £350 a month, and I wanted to understand whether solar could genuinely do something about it.

I’m Michael Nunn, and I founded WattVerdict. I completed two years of electrical training, gaining City & Guilds qualifications including the 17th Edition wiring regulations, and these days I work in technical production for live events. So I’m comfortable getting into the technical detail — but even with that background, researching the rapidly developing UK plug-in solar market wasn’t as straightforward as it should have been.

Products, specifications, retailer claims and official compliance information were scattered across different places. I found myself building spreadsheets and checking official records just to work out what was compliant, what was actually available and how the prices compared.

“

That research became WattVerdict — the comparison resource I wished existed when I started looking.

How comparisons work

Our process, step by step.

Plug-in solar is new enough in the UK that the market is moving faster than most buyers can keep track of. Power output, hardware, installation requirements and regulatory status all vary between systems — and products being marketed in the UK do not all have the same verifiable compliance status.

Every system we list is checked daily against the official ENA register, and we show the compliance status the register gives. That way you can see the difference between what’s being marketed and what official records support.

To help you compare, we bring together the information that’s available: the register, retailer prices we’ve checked (with the date we checked them) and what comes with each kit, taken from the retailer’s own page. Best Kits ranks the kits on sale by price and estimated yearly electricity, and Compare lists every registered system. Not every system has a price yet, prices can change between our checks, and we haven’t tested these kits ourselves: our electricity figures are estimates.

How WattVerdict is funded

If a product isn’t compliant, a commission won’t make it compliant.

WattVerdict is independently run. Some retailer links may earn us a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. This helps support the website and doesn’t determine which kits we recommend.

Commercial relationships don’t determine which products we track, the compliance status we report or the information we publish. Read our Editorial & Independence Policy.
